Summer 2020 Concert Series

5 long term care homes, 6 talented young musicians and a mission to bring joy to the elderly during a global pandemic

A Noble Cause

SFMW started for one simple reason: recreational therapy was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing that elderly populations were particularly vulnerable to the mental strain of the pandemic, we set out to bring them joy with the power of music.

Coming Together

After securing funding from the Rising Youth grant, we recruited 6 of the best young musicians from across the GTA and partnered with five long term care homes. We rented all the equipment we needed to be heard by every single resident and held a rehearsal so we could make sure everything would run smoothly.

The Start of Something New

Our summer concert series went better than we could have hoped! We got rave reviews from residents who watched our concerts and from the homes where we performed them and we were covered by CTV, Global, IHeartRadio and Radio Canada. What we were able to achieve with our first initiative showed us the potential we have to help people and encouraged us to keep going.

Testimonials

Loved the singer, tuba player and violins. Such good feelings from it. Absolutely beautiful, all of the performers! Please come back!

We are enormously grateful to Students for Music and Wellness for performing at Bloomington Cove today. We appreciate that our residents had the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful performance together in a safe way. The student concert was uplifting for both residents and team members, as well as a positive and energizing event for our whole community.
